Pride or humility

"The minute we think that pride is no longer a problem is the minute it is a problem.  Pride is your greatest enemy.  Humility is your greatest friend." - Elder Neil L. Andersen.

Hugh Nibley once stated:
"Who is righteous?  Anyone who is repenting.  No matter how bad he has been, if he is repenting he is a righteous man.  There is hope for him.  And no matter how good he has been all his life, if he is not repenting, he is a wicked man.  The difference is which way you are facing.  The man on top of the stairs facing down is much worse off than the man on the bottom step who is facing up.  The direction we are facing, that is repentance."

These teachings are consistent with the Lord's parable as found in Luke 18:9-14
9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

"Some are so proud they never learn of obedience and spiritual submissiveness. They will have very arthritic knees on the day when every knee shall bend. There will be no gallery then to play to; all will be participants! Maintaining Church membership on our own terms, therefore, is not true discipleship." - Elder Neal A. Maxwell.

Time to take some spiritual pain meds and bend those knees a little more deeply and frequently!
